Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. went from a prison cell to becoming one of the most beloved broadcasters in Washington, D.C. — a talk-show host and community activist whose blunt, funny, streetwise voice made him a local institution in the 1960s and ’70s.
His life was dramatised in the 2007 film Talk to Me, with Don Cheadle in the title role. He died in 1984.
His freewheeling talk programmes on WOL radio and local television, which made him one of DC's most trusted and outspoken voices.
Don Cheadle plays Greene in this biographical drama about his rise from prison to the airwaves during a turbulent era.
Is this Peter Green the real Peter Green?
No — he was born Ralph Waldo Greene and went by “Petey”. Neither “Peter” nor “Green”. Beloved, but ineligible. That honour is the real Peter Green's.
