“Oh Well” (1969) is a two-part Peter Green song: Part 1 is a driving acoustic-and-electric riff with terse, self-deprecating lyrics; Part 2 is a longer, cinematic instrumental. It reached the UK top 10 and has been covered by everyone from Rockets to Tom Petty.
“Oh Well” is really two pieces of music. Part 1 is a stop-start riff with a handful of blunt, self-mocking lines — Green shrugging at his own ordinariness — that became a rock radio staple. Part 2 is a longer, almost classical instrumental, Spanish-guitar and strings, that Green reportedly rated more highly than the hit side.
Released in 1969, it reached the UK top 10 despite the band's own doubts about it, and it has been widely covered since — a reminder of how much range Green packed into the early Fleetwood Mac.
